"Skeleton of Giant" Is a HOAX

The National Geographic Society has not discovered ancient giant humans, despite rampant reports and pictures.

The hoax began with a doctored photo and later found a receptive online audience—thanks perhaps to the image's unintended religious connotations.

By 2004 the "discovery" was being blogged and emailed all over the world—"Giant Skeleton Unearthed!"—and it's been enjoying a revival in 2007.

The photo fakery might be obvious to most people. But the tall tale refuses to lie down even five years later, if a continuing flow of emails to National Geographic News are any indication. (The National Geographic Society owns National Geographic News.)

The messages come from around the globe—Portugal, India, El Salvador, Malaysia, Africa, the Dominican Republic, Greece, Egypt, South Africa, Kenya. But they all ask the same question: Is it true?

Perpetuating the Myth

Helping to fuel the story's recent resurgence are a smattering of media outlets that have reported the find as fact.

An often cited March 2007 article in India's Hindu Voice monthly, for example, claimed that a National Geographic Society team, in collaboration with the Indian Army, had dug up a giant human skeleton in India.

"Recent exploration activity in the northern region of India uncovered a skeletal remains of a human of phenomenal size," the report read.

The story went on to say the discovery was made by a "National Geographic Team (India Division) with support from the Indian Army since the area comes under jurisdiction of the Army."

UFO-ET mythology and nervous breakdowns.

In the rarefied ufological subculture, insiders talk about certain nervous breakdowns suffered by self proclaimed experts in extraterrestrial live, cosmic civilizations, cover ups, disclosures and similar fantasies.

In a previous post we described what is called cognitive dissonance.

The internal conflict and eventual breakdown happens when the individual perceives logical contradictions between what he truly believes and what he says. His public discourse becomes self-denial.

Imagine what happens inside the mind of an intelligent, perhaps academic individual who makes a living selling nonsense and fantasies as facts. The big problem here is that he KNOWS this.

Picture the permanent ethical and intellectual crisis of a man or woman who knows that he/she is living in a fantastic world which has little to do with reality. This cruel contradiction isolates the victim not only from society, but sometimes from his own family.

Paradoxically, the insane believes in his fantasies while the dissonant doesn’t. His personal, private convictions are denied when he writes, talks or debate with those who are right, those who confidentially think like him.

 

Our hypothetic dissonant asks for disclosure knowing that there is nothing to disclose. He describes the extraterrestrial visitors knowing that there are no ET visitors, or talks about alien bases in Mars or the Moon, knowing that there are not such bases. His life becomes a conscious, professional lie.

When the cognitive dissonance situation becomes unbearable, our “ET-Paranormal researcher” can go into insanity or into a total cynicism. The positive outcome would be a courageous give up and consequent recognition of what he already knows is the real world.

UFO Industry and Cognitive dissonance.

Is important to recognize the problem of cognitive dissonance, because in the UFO industry we find intelligent individuals whose life must be a permanent contradiction between their convictions and what they write for the public.

Cognitive dissonance is an uncomfortable feeling caused by holding two contradictory ideas simultaneously.

The "ideas" or "cognitions" in question may include attitudes and beliefs, and also the awareness of one's behavior. The theory of cognitive dissonance proposes that people have a motivational drive to reduce dissonance by changing their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors, or by justifying or rationalizing their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors.

Dissonance normally occurs when a person perceives a logical inconsistency among his or her cognitions.

Let’s imagine that someone is forced to do or say publicly something they privately really don't want to do, dissonance is created between their cognition (I didn't want to do this) and their behavior (I did it).  Forced compliance occurs when an individual performs an action that is inconsistent with his or her beliefs.

Now, this cognitive dissonance will have also a great impact on the social life of the individual affected.

Most probably she or he will became growingly isolated and loose self-esteem.

If the differences between real and proclaimed convictions grow, the situation will eventually become critical.

It is probable that individuals forced to remain in such a cognitive dissonance will “lose their minds.”

Even Insanity is possible for some border line personalities.

Richard Dolan and "Dark Journalism."

As we all know, the dark cloud of the total crisis is over our heads, and there is nothing mysterious about the character of this situation.  In the post-industrial society, speculative, unproductive capitalism cannot survive. Change or chaos are the two possibilities.

In this toxic social atmosphere, time comes for the mythologists and prophets of doom. The old superstitions and the religious fundamentalism are brought back and gods, devils, archons, angels and similarly nonexistent entities become fashionable in the subcultures.

In the present times, the ufological fantasies blend with the biblical horrors and can be sold in a limited market.

Richard Dolan becomes a “dark journalist”. (This is a very important new definition and should be followed.)

The two thousand years old apocalyptic narrative combines with the imaginary technology of the nonexistent alien spacecrafts.

In the same website where President Obama is called a “terrorist”, Richard Dolan talks about the destruction of civilization. 

Also, these “dark journalists” inform us that churches are vandalized by Satanists, but the big feature is the usual nonsense which as religion, doesn’t require any kind of proof.

Comedy and Drama in the UFO Subculture.

One of the impossible dreams of the UFO-ET fantasists is to have some relevance in the big media world, but this is not possible and never will be.

For conspiracy theorists, self proclaimed experts in extraterrestrial civilizations, contactees, professors of Ufology in “online universities” and cosmic alchemists (Sic.), the small world of the so called UFO subculture is their natural element.

This is so, because in this subculture, rational dissidence is not authorized. Exofantasists hate the competence in their own imaginary micro universe, but this is tolerated since each one them must present himself/herself as the only true prophet of the extraterrestrial legend.

However this “friendly fighting” is only possible inside the UFO fans world, but never in the mass media, where any UFO mythologist is easily silenced in minutes for a true scientist, or a rational journalist asking for evidences of the supposed ET presence in our planet and massive cover-up.

That is why fantasists that make a living selling fiction as fact must look for alternative options.

Mythological ufologists know that nothing new will never come from the UFO=ET legend. After some experience they learn that the same old book with new fantasies added cannot be sold again and again, and consequently, they organize carefully their business with lots of pictures and full nonsense.

Some others instead, try to find alternative nonsense for sell, and they go into New Age, Ghost hunting or pseudo-sciences.

Those with fewer scruples even go into hoaxes or into mellifluous pseudo-mystic channeled messages.

Readers should not believe that the professionals of the UFO subculture live in a comfortable world. Hate, envy and denial are the consequences of selling the UFO=ET legend as fact.
